TRAINING PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Gastroenterology Training Program of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and affiliated hospitals is a three-year combined clinical and clinical research program. There are seven fellows for 2006-07. One year is spent doing clinical research (usually the first one); two years are clinical, and include rotations in the GI service of the University and Veteran's Hospitals. Rotations in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Radiology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Liver Transplantation and private practice are mandatory. Elective rotations through other related services or institutions are encouraged for fellows doing satisfactory work, in order to broaden their exposure to other diagnostic or therapeutic modalities.
In addition to the training schedule, all fellows are involved in professionalism exercises with 1st year students, and preceptoring and teaching students and residents through out the three years. This participation includes the second year medical students course (discussion groups and physical diagnosis exercises), serving as preceptors and group discussion leaders for third year medical students, and supervising senior students in elective rotations. These activities allow them to further develop their teaching skills, serve as role models, and maintain knowledge in Internal Medicine. The fellows also are the direct supervisors of Internal Medicine residents rotating in Gastroenterology.
